  1. RECOVERING FROM A HARD DISK CRASH?

  3.   DisKeeper can be incredibly useful after a total crash.  If you use Symantec Tools or a similar utility to recover your files, you may need to try three different recovery methods to get your files back.  Afterwards, you have three sets of files, which are mostly duplicates.  Symantec Utilities can’t recover the name and type of some of these files: they’re just left as generic documents.  The solution:

  5.    Put the files that DO have names and types into a folder called “A”
  6.    Put the files with no names or types into folders “B” and “C”.
  7.    Let DisKeeper detect and delete the duplicates.

  9. The main point is to put the best-recovered files into folders which DisKeeper will see first.  Since it scans alpabetically, it will trash duplicates in folder “C” before “B” and those in “B” before “A”.

  11. NOTE: If you have hundreds of files, you may want to let DisKeeper do this automatically instead of using the “ask” option.

  14.   Sometimes a disk will become damaged in such a way that the information contained in files actually belongs to other files.  This happens when the directory of the disk becomes corrupted and the allocation map for a file points to the wrong sectors on a disk.  DisKeeper’s “Search Disks for…” command can locate information stored in these unexpected places by scanning the contents of files in selected folders or disks and reporting where the text you are looking for is really located.  Admittedly, there are better (and more specialized) programs for doing this type of search, but it should be sufficient for occasional searches.
